Rationale for Successful Interviewing Multimedia Website

This multimedia website will integrate various media and interactivity to engage students in learning how to have a successful interview experience.  The students will be working collaboratively in a constructivist learning environment in a unit on interviewing skills.  They will begin with preparing for an interview by practicing an elevator pitch to sell themselves and researching the company that they are interviewing with.  They will be viewing a video on what to wear and not to wear so they can dress for success.  The interview process and how to answer questions and what questions to ask will be addressed.  In the post-interview process the students will learn how to create a thank you letter that will address items that were not emphasized in the actual interview.  The various activities will enhance the multiple learning intelligences including visual/spatial, verbal/linguistic, musical/rhythmic, and naturalist. As stated in the article "Constructing Knowledge with Technology" by Sandholtz(1997): "Technology is a catalyst for change in classroom processes because it provides a distinct departure, a change in context that suggests alternative ways of operating.  It can drive a shift from a traditional approach toward a more eclectic set of learning activities that include knowledge-building situations for students"(pg 15)
On the home page will be links to navigate the students through the various processes.  The first link, the introduction will be this page and the rationale of the use of a multimedia website in instruction.  The lesson plan will describe the activities, the learning objectives , NYS CDOS Standards and the Technology standards that will be addressed.  The Pre-Interview process will be researching data on a company and students will create a report.  Creation of the report will address the Verbal/Linguistic intelligence as they enjoy researching and writing.  The students will also be creating an elevator pitch which will be their lead statement for their interview.  This will be  posted to an audio blog.  The use of of audio will address the musical/rhythmic intelligence as these students to hear patterns.  The audio files will be accompanied by text to assist students and any visitors to the web site that have disabilities.  In the Dress for Success page, the students will view a video that gives tips and pictures of what to wear and what not wear to an interview.  The students will create their own mini-video showing an outfit that would personally be good for them to wear on an interview, and something to wear to work that is business casual.  The Visual/Spatial intelligence of the learner will be addressed by the visual aspects of production when constructing their own videos.  On the interview page there will be a lecture page on commonly asked interview questions, and questions for the interviewee to ask at an interview.  Each student will post an interview question on a discussion blog, and students will be expected to answer two of their classmates questions.   For the Post-Interview process the students will be given a tutorial and tips on how to create a thank you letter .  The students will be also visiting a local company as a field trip.  They will get to see what an office environment is like which will help them to visualize the surroundings of their interview.  This activity addresses the naturalist intelligence as these learners enjoy observing the world around them.  The culminating activity that will be completed in this unit will be mock interviews.  The students will work in groups of three, taking on the role of interviewer and two interviewees. They will create a script, and perform this live in front of the class.  The interviews will be videotaped and posted to the class blog.  Each student will post to two of the groups and decide who the best candidate to hire would be and discuss why.
As stated by Boethel and Dimmick, "Hypertext and Hypermedia may be used as tools by students for exploring, assembling and linking information to develop and present their understanding of almost any topic."(pg 20).  The use of this website addresses many of the intelligences and the final  collaborative learning activity of the mock interview focuses on the interpersonal intelligence.  This intelligence gives the learners the capacity to understand and effectively work with others which is an important asset to have for any future employment.
